Nature's Head composting toilet for tiny house

The best composting toilets for tiny houses

Waste disposal seems to be a very hot topic in the tiny house world, and I just want to weigh in on what I believe to be the best toilet options. Some people may prefer a traditional flush toilet if they can park where they will have a sewage or septic connection (usually an RV park).  But flush toilets use a lot of water and most tiny housers won’t find parking where sewage disposal is easy or possible. For that reason, the #1 solution for a tiny houses toilet (by far!) is a composting toilet. Incinerating toilets and toilets that shrink-wrap […]

Advanced Framing (for tiny houses)

Advanced Framing for Tiny Houses

Advanced framing, though decades old, is still not nearly as well known as it should be. The goals of advanced framing match closely to the desired outcomes of most tiny house builders, so I’d advocate for its wider use throughout the tiny house building community (DIY included, of course!). For those of you you have not heard of it before, or want to learn more, this post if for you. Green Building Advisor defines advanced framing this way: Advanced framing, also called optimum value engineering (OVE), is a framing system that aims to pare the amount of lumber used to […]

Tiny House Stoves, Cooktops & Ranges

There are many options for cooking in a tiny house. If you are not opposed to using propane in your house (and are already using it for an on-demand, tankless water heater) I highly recommend cooking with propane gas. Propane is far more efficient than electricity for any heating element and in most cases leads a better cooking experience. Propane can be used in smaller RV-style ranges, marine ranges (higher quality stainless steel), permanently installed stovetops and portable cooktops. If you prefer to use electricity, one efficient solution would be to use a portable induction cooktop, which can be stored […]

Going Solar in a Tiny House

The concept of tiny house living is built on self-reliance and minimization. Transitioning to a tiny house means minimizing your space and belongings, but it also goes hand-in-hand with reducing your negative impact on the environment. It makes sense that many tiny home dwellers choose to fulfill some or all of their energy needs with a photovoltaic (PV) solar system, since it decreases dependence on utility companies and meshes with the environmental philosophy behind going tiny. The type and size of solar system you will need depends on the answer to the following questions: What’s your current energy load? Do […]

Tiny House Design & Construction Guide Cover

Book Review: Tiny House Design & Construction Guide

Dan Louche’s Tiny House Design & Construction Guide is truly one of the most important tiny house resources you can buy. From my personal experience, I can say it’s the best “how to build a tiny house” book I know of, and one that I referenced a lot when building my tiny house. (I’d say my house turned out really well, thanks in part to this book!) I’m writing this review because Dan has recently released an updated 2nd edition of the book that contains 50% more content including 38 more images and illustrations! The book was great before, and […]

The Culer SOLO in use in the Tiny Project house

Product Review: Culer SOLO Flash-Evaporative Air Cooler

The kind folks at Culer recently sent me a SOLO Flash-Evaporative Air Cooler to test out in the tiny house environment. With the heat of summer quickly approaching here in Texas, this spring was the perfect time to test this personal cooler for its effectiveness. Here’s my review. Design The Culer SOLO is an attractive and solidly built little appliance. It comes in a cool white color and sports a clean design which I find attractive. It’s made of plastic, but seems robust. It’s designed with a wider base (also its water tank) which is great for stability but does […]

Tiny House Internet Options

Tiny House Internet Options (cable, wireless, satellite & more)

One big issue many tiny house dwellers face is how to get fast and reliable internet service to their tiny house. Many tiny housers have somewhat alternative, location-independent jobs, and often work from home. This makes a good internet connection even more important. Many of us also forgo the traditional cable TV hookup, relying on an entirely wireless, internet-based solution for our entertainment and education (Netflix, Hulu, HBOGo, etc.). For those living in cities, internet options are more numerous, but the farther you get from a major city, and the closer you are to being off-grid, the harder it may […]
